HP1240: Fueling for Optimal Health and Performance Seminar
Hello and thank you to all who attended our first HP1240 seminar, “Fueling for Optimal Health and Performance.” I am very pleased with the turn-out and I have heard nothing but rave reviews about our guest dietician Laura Moretti. Laura brought a young and energetic approach to nutrition and understanding how to better fuel our bodies before, during and after skating and exercise.
Laura comes to us from Boston Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine Division. Her expertise working with figure skaters and ballet dancers really helped our skaters and parents understand the importance of proper nutrition and gave them the tools as well as tips and tricks to eating better and feeling better both on and off the ice. Proper nutrition is good not only for our overall health, but for increasing energy on the ice, speeding up recovery time, building stronger muscles and bones and even injury prevention. Staying ahead of injuries is one of the biggest challenges for young athletes and good nutrition is a one of many great ways to do so.
One notable part of the seminar that really resonated with the skaters was equating proper nutrition timing to putting gas in a car. Without putting gas in first, the car will not work or move. Once you put gas in the car, you have to continue putting more in to keep the car going. Another important detail was balancing carbohydrate, protein and fat intake in our diet. An athlete’s plate has a proper mix of each and the proportions change during different times in the season or during competitions.
