Annette Blackwell

Personal Profile:
I began figure skating at the age of six in Germany and progressed through every level of the German Figure Skating testing structure in both Free Skating and Compulsory Figures. During my 17-year competitive career, I earned numerous regional podium finishes , some international events and competed at the German National Championships at the senior level before retiring due to injury.
Moving to the United States in 1997, I completed my Master of Business Administration at Providence College after earning the German equivalent of a Juris Doctor. Before returning to skating full-time, I built a career in marketing, product management, and higher education, serving as a Marketing Manager, Product Manager, and later as an Assistant Professor of Business at Providence College.
For more than a decade, I have coached skaters of all ages and competitive levels. My students have successfully passed every level of the U.S. Figure Skating testing structure in both Singles and Skating Skills. While I enjoy all aspects of coaching, I have a particular passion for jump development and technical progression, complemented by choreography that allows each athlete’s personality to shine.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of coaching athletes from their very first steps on the ice through the highest levels of U.S. Figure Skating, including a U.S. Junior National Champion, Junior Grand Prix medalist, Junior World Championship competitor, and annual participant in the U.S. Figure Skating National Development Camp.
I am driven by curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning. Throughout my coaching career, I have sought opportunities to observe and learn from coaches at every level of the sport. Most recently, I participated in the U.S. Figure Skating Emerging Athletes High Performance Camp in Milan, where I had the opportunity to observe Olympic-level athletes and coaches while continuing to expand my understanding of elite athlete development.

Coaching Philosophy:
“Skating is the classroom. Confidence, resilience, independence, and problem-solving are the lessons that last a lifetime.”
I believe every skater has a unique path, and there is no single formula for success. My goal is not only to teach technical skating skills but to help athletes become independent learners who understand their skating, solve problems, build confidence, and take ownership of their progress. These are life skills that extend far beyond the rink.
I genuinely enjoy coaching skaters of all ages and abilities. Whether it’s a first three-turn, a passed test, or a quad jump, every milestone matters. Success looks different for every athlete, and I enjoy the challenge of helping each skater become the best version of themselves.
I believe lasting success is built through strong fundamentals, consistency, and attention to detail. At the same time, I recognize that endless repetition can eventually limit motivation and enjoyment. My goal is to find the right balance—providing enough consistency to build confidence and mastery while keeping training engaging, challenging, and enjoyable for every athlete.
I encourage my athletes to think, ask questions, and become active participants in their own development rather than simply following instructions.
I also believe that a strong coach-athlete-parent partnership is essential. Parents play a valuable role by providing encouragement, trust, and support outside the rink, allowing the coach and athlete to focus on learning and development together. When everyone understands their role and works toward the same goal, athletes thrive in a positive and supportive environment.
I am driven by curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning. Every athlete is different, and that is what makes coaching so rewarding. I continue to learn through education, observation, and collaboration because I believe that growth never stops—for my athletes or for me.

Additional Information:
Though my professional career took me into law, business, marketing, and higher education, coaching has allowed me to combine two lifelong passions—teaching and figure skating. As an Assistant Professor at Providence College, I discovered how much I enjoyed helping others learn, solve problems, and reach their potential. Those experiences continue to shape the way I coach today.
Figure skating is more than a sport or hobby—it becomes a lifestyle. It teaches discipline, resilience, time management, and the ability to work through challenges while celebrating progress along the way. I consider it a privilege to be part of that journey, helping athletes not only become stronger skaters but also confident, independent young adults.
My professional background has strengthened my ability to communicate, mentor, and develop long-term plans for athletes and their families. I believe the greatest reward in coaching is watching athletes grow—not only in their technical abilities, but also in the confidence, character, and life skills they carry with them long after they leave the ice.
