Skating and the Community of Boston
The Boston Common Frog Pond is nestled in the heart of America’s oldest public park. The Frog Pond is a special jewel of the City of Boston offering a place to enjoy and experience the historic Boston Common throughout the year. In recognition of the value of this landmark and the opportunity to elevate and expand this jewel of Boston, America’s third oldest skating club, The Skating Club of Boston partners with the Boston Parks Department and the City of Boston to operate the Frog Pond and expand the programs and services offered to the Boston community.
Voted the #1 outdoor ice skating rink in the U.S. by USA Today’s 10 Best!
In the winter months, from mid-November to mid-March, members of the community and visitors from all over the world share their enjoyment of the Frog Pond skating rink. Whether you are a first-time skater or an aspiring Olympian, Frog Pond enables you to take pleasure in the sport of ice skating. Frog Pond offers public ice skating, skate rentals, skate sharpening, the Skating Academy Learn to Skate program, rink rentals, birthday parties, college nights, and even wedding proposal packages.
Frog Pond Skating Spectacular
The Skating Club of Boston produces two free figure skating shows for the Boston community. Each show features national and international Club soloists, groups, synchronized skating, and Theatre On Ice.
With the city as the backdrop, Club skaters take the ice to entertain the crowds at the Boston Common Tree Lighting Festival in early December and at First Night Boston on New Year’s Eve.
The Skating Academy
The Skating Academy offers top-quality instruction in all of the U.S. Figure Skating and USA Hockey disciplines. From private instruction to group lessons, beginners to advanced, Skating Academy is the learn-to-skate school for you.
The Skating in the Schools program brings children from local schools to the Frog Pond to learn to skate and enrich themselves academically. The program gives schools in the community the opportunity to expand their extra-curricular offerings during the winter season. The goals of the Skating After School program, sponsored in large part by Friends of the Public Garden, are simple but important: expose students to the pleasure and discipline of learning a new sport, the value of exercise and good nutrition, and the experience of being outdoors in America’s oldest and most treasured public park.
Frog Pond also offers discounts for active duty and military veterans and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
When the snow and ice melt, the Frog Pond serves as a reflecting pool and remains a fun destination for locals and visitors. The Boston Common Carousel opens and our annual Barks and Bagels event gives dogs (and their humans) the opportunity to meet new friends and socialize within the community.
The Frog Pond Spray Pool opens in late June through Labor Day and is a Boston family favorite for city dwellers and visitors alike. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty and history of the Boston Common while children are welcome to splash around and cool down on hot summer days. FREE Summer Yoga is offered weekly through a program with the Boston Public Health Commission.
As the leaves change, so do the programs at Frog Pond. Fall programming includes Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s Movie Nights with Friday night screenings of family-friendly movies on Boston Common. The season caps off with the annual Pumpkin Float at Frog Pond inviting residents and visitors to bring their carved pumpkins, don their best costumes, and enjoy the best city in the nation.
