Our theme this year is “Over The Rainbow”, and it’s a tradition of ice dance weekend to designate Friday evening as a dress up night. So if you wish, come as your favorite citizen of OZ, maybe the Witch, or just BE the rainbow.
At Saturday Dinner Dance we will have the Bo Winiker band. We’ve had them at our previous Ice Dance Weekends, and they are great if you like to dance.

About Boston Ice Dance Weekend and The Adult Community Activities Committee
The Adult Community Activities Committee (ACAC) is very pleased to present an annual Boston Ice Dance Weekend at The Skating Club of Boston. Co-Chaired by Laura Morrissette and George Blaszczynski, both are enthusiastic social ice dancers who started the revival of social ice dance in the Boston area by organizing and running the Minuteman Ice Dance Weekend for several years. In 2022 they were invited to bring the Boston Ice Dance Weekend back to The Skating Club of Boston.
The ACAC is thrilled to welcome everyone to The Skating Club of Boston to skate in both the West Rink and the Tenley E. Albright Performance Center throughout the weekend of activities including catered meals by the Club’s world-class hospitality team, and evening entertainment in the Club’s beautiful Frieling Club Lounge.
What is Social Ice Dancing?
The quick answer: Ballroom Dancing on Ice. Ice dancing has a long history that began as a social activity to interest skaters and their families to come to the local skating clubs. The clubs had weekly social ice dance sessions that usually included off-ice social event. Experienced dancers would teach new dancers the steps to dozens of standard patterns. Ice Dancing gradually evolved into the competitive figure skating sport that it is today. It has a recognized USFSA test structure and sanctioned competitions at all levels. Social Ice Dancing is not like that; it goes back to the sport’s roots of non-competitive skating just for fun. Nobody’s judging you, so you are free to enjoy the dancing and chat with your partner.
Is This for Me?
Whatever your skating level, you will enjoy the ice dance weekend. It’s all about being social and having fun. If you love to be with other skaters who share your passion for ice dance, you will have a great time. And the food, so much wonderful food …
Do I need to come with a partner?
No, it’s social ice dancing. Everyone is encouraged to dance with lots of different partners. If you don’t come with a partner, no worries, you’ll get plenty of offers to dance. And what’s amazing, but true, is that you are likely to dance with partners of very different skill level, and really enjoy it.
I’m a Solo Dancer, will I have to dance with a partner?
An Ice Dance Weekend is meant to be social. All dancers are strongly encouraged to skate with partners whenever possible. If you’ve never danced with anyone who’s not a coach, you’ll find it’s a whole different experience. Try it; you might like it. If you are asked to dance, courtesy requires that you either accept the invitation or sit out the dance. If you can’t find a partner, you are welcome to skate solo as long as you maintain a good pattern, and enter the pattern behind all paired dancers.
What dances should I know?
Even if you are a real beginner, you will find skaters eager to guide through the pro-bronze dances. If you are more advanced and feel comfortable with Dutch Waltz, Canasta Tango, Rhythm Blues, Swing Dance, Cha Cha, you will spend a lot of time dancing. This does not imply that you have tested or passed these dances, but merely that you know what the steps are can do something that resembles them, on time with the music. If you are a more advanced skater, we will play dances up to the pre-gold level, and higher per request. We will also play dances that are no in the official test structure, such as the Golden Skaters Waltz, Rose Petal Waltz (Three Lobe Waltz), Riverside Rhumba, Baby Blues, and the Swing Waltz.
What should I wear?
Ice Dance weekends offer you an opportunity to dress up and show off some of those test and competition clothes hanging in the back of the closet. On Friday night you may have fun dressing up in a costume for our theme, which this year is “Over the Rainbow”. But the emphasis is on fun and ice dancing, so you are welcome to wear whatever is safe and comfortable.
Are all ages welcome?
Yes, well-behaved skaters of all ages are welcome to join us at the Boston Ice Dance Weekend.
Can I come with a coach?
We do have a policy for non Club coaches. The registration fee, with the exception of the dinner dance, will be waived for any dance coach who comes with one or more fully registered students to the Boston Ice Dance Weekend and agrees to partner with other attendees. We require that the coach present his/her credentials to Katharine Steeger or her designee prior to the Boston Ice Dance Weekend. The purpose is social, not an occasion for a dance lesson. A coach wishing to come to the Saturday Dinner Dance, must register for that event and pay the fee. Any further arrangements with a coach are up to the students.
What is the Summer Sizzler?
The Summer Sizzler is an ice show on August 14th at 7pm in the Tenley E. Albright Performance Center at the conclusion of U.S. Figure Skating’s Champs Camp held at The Skating Club of Boston. Champs Camp is an invitation-only camp to prepare the top U.S. skaters for the competitive season. Tickets on sale now, visit scboston.org/tickets!
