An avid professional portrait painter and film/video maker. The more coaches teach, the less they skate, until they no longer can, a tragedy for decades I vowed to avoid. Instead of teaching, I explored skating through doing, drawing, choreographing, filming, and writing. Resulting essays have been published in skating magazines, films and videos presented on PBS, the American Film Institute, the Kennedy Center, the Hirshhorn Museum, and other museums in the U.S. and abroad.

The privilege of working daily for hours with eight legendary coaches was rare when I had it as a young skater and unobtainable now. Many of their insights we now risk losing. Having for decades deferred teaching, I now find it a way to share that legacy, enriching the student’s and my own skating as well, a continually renewing two-way exchange between teacher/student and student/teacher.
