The Thomas J. McGinnis Award honors the legacy of long-time Club member, Tom (Tommy) McGinnis, who enthusiastically dedicated his life to every aspect of the sport of figure skating. Tommy was a competitor, performer, producer, director, choreographer, publisher, judge of professional competitions, rink operator, and a coach at the local, national, world and Olympic levels. As a PSA master-rated coach in all disciplines, Tommy encouraged his students to believe in themselves, push beyond their comfort zone, and above all, participate in the sport with enthusiasm. Tommy was especially supportive of adult skaters, a group in whom he saw great potential to develop a life-long passion for skating, no matter one’s starting age.
This awards honors Tommy’s life-long passion for figure skating by commending an adult skater who emulates Tommy’s gusto for the sport. The recipient of this award should demonstrate character both on and off the ice; fully participate in Club activities such as volunteering, skating in Ice Chips, and representing the Club at competitions throughout the season; actively encourage others to similarly participate; and embody the enthusiasm and spirit that Tommy brought to all of his skating endeavors throughout his long and illustrious life.
